RUBY

A week after Thanksgiving and the fridge was still full of pie. Not for lack of trying on her and Dahlia’s part. They were dedicated to their dessert eating, but often ate out during the week, or got takeout. And the pie was starting to eat at her, rather than her eating the pie.

That’s not the problem.

No, she knew it wasn’t.

She was restless. She had been restless ever since her encounter with Nathan on the anniversary of Caitlin’s disappearance. Whether it made sense or not. She should be focused on getting the displays together at the museum. She still needed to stop by the church and go through the costumes. Dahlia’s first article—about the pear industry in town, and the displays at the museum—had done a lot to increase the foot traffic in the museum, and she was grateful for that. Dahlia had also told her about her trip to interview Walter Berryman, and what the older man had said about the night Caitlin had disappeared. And it had got her thinking about Nathan again.

As if you stopped.

She ignored that thought. And before she could fully contemplate what she was doing, she was in the fridge getting out a piece of pie. And then she took that pie, stuck it on the passenger seat of her car and began to drive toward Nathan’s house. It was really not a very smart idea, but then, Ruby wasn’t known for smart ideas. Impulsive ones, certainly. And sometimes they panned out. She might just leave the pie on the doorstep. That seemed like not the worst idea.

There was a truck there, parked in front of the residence, and she had a feeling that meant he was there. And she couldn’t resist the temptation. She walked up the front steps and knocked on the door.

And when he jerked it open, taller and broader than she remembered, his dark hair looking like he’d been running his fingers through it, her stomach did something strange. “Hi,” she said.

“You actually came here this time? Running into each other out and about wasn’t enough?” His tone was dry, his smile sardonic.

“I wanted to see how you were. And I brought you pie.”

“You brought me pie?”

“Well, I was worried about you. It’s just that you told me you didn’t have anyone else. No one for me to call when I...”

“That wasn’t my finest moment,” he said. “Maybe let’s not revisit it.”

“That’s fine,” she said. “We don’t have to revisit it. But I... Well, I assume that you were alone for Thanksgiving.”

“You assume right.”

“And I... I thought that someone ought to be in charge of making sure you get a little bit of pumpkin pie.”

“You don’t even know if I like pie.”

“What kind of monster doesn’t like pie?”

“A whole lot of people think I’m a monster, Ruby. Maybe you should take a hint.
